Doncaster Art Fair Competition.

Updated: Jul 11, 2020

I came across this competition on social media, fortunately it was free to enter and instead of a panel voting for the winner, the voting is open to the public. I found this interesting and thought it would be a good way to get my work out there. Even if I didn't win anything, people would still be able to see it.

'Doncaster Art Fair was founded with the dream of making Doncaster a key international destination for art lovers, art buyers and artists alike. A hub of optimism and opportunity for local creatives to showcase and sell their works whilst developing a sense of community. We are driven by artist support and planning art events.

One of our key aims has always been to make the art world accessible for everyone; whether you are a seasoned professional or a budding star in the making, we welcome everyone with open arms to allow them to enjoy and purchase art.

In short, we are a passionate, welcoming and diverse family or art appreciators and we believe anyone can enjoy and create art.'

I thought my current project about phobias would fit well within this competition. Phobias can affect many peoples mental health, especially during this hard time. I chose to enter the image "Agora" into this competition. Agora is an image inspired by the phobia Agoraphobia, the fear of leaving a safe space - I thought this image would be good to enter as many people may have developed that particular phobia and it can really have an impact on their mental health.

Agora.

Along with the image of our work, we had to photograph ourselves in our studio/workspace and along with the image, we had to write a brief description on what the project is about.

PHOBOS. Φόβος. (Ancient Greek : phobia)

PHOBOS is a project inspired by phobias. These uneasy images are designed to elicit the uncomfortable. Whilst some phobias represented are seen as irrational, others will be more understood. The work seeks to raise empathy in the viewer, helping to acknowledge the distress that can be caused by the most unlikely phenomena and deserves recognition. Phobias can affect many people's mental health, and it's important that they are supported and that their phobias are recognised.
