Jenny Saville is a British artist who primarily uses oil paint on canvas. I first heard about her and saw her work while I was studying A-Level Art during Sixth Form, her portrait paintings were slightly disturbing, the large, visible brush strokes and tones she used made the paintings unsettling, but you can't help but look at every detail inside.
The neutral colours and tones that fill the painting make the paintings look eerie, but the small bursts of blue and pink grab your attention and makes your eyes wonder around the painting trying to find more. The lack of fine detail also draws you in more - the bold brush strokes makes the painting stand out and the distortion the brush marks create makes the painting look much more surreal, like a dream, nightmare or a memory. The full detail is never there, but theirs enough there for you to make out what it is, where the shadows are being cast and the expression.
